Stephen H. Schmid, 73 of South Amboy, NJ died suddenly on Monday, May 6, 2024.
Steve was born in Glen Ridge, NJ and grew up in Montclair. He graduated from Trinity-Pawling School in New York, which was where his great uncle, grandfather, father and brother attended. He received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in History from Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN. Steve had retired as Field Agent for the Knights of Columbus Insurance and had been working for the South Amboy/Sayreville Times, handling advertising, story writing and photography.
He was an active member, past Grand Knight and the current treasurer of the South Amboy Knights of Columbus Council #426. He was also a member of the Monsignor John F. Brady Assembly #676, the current Treasurer of the 4th Degree Assembly and a past Faithful Navigator. Steve was a member of the Sacred Heart Holy Name Society and Seniors, the Our Lady of Victory Seniors, the South Amboy Seniors and was the treasurer of Saint Mary Seniors.
He was an avid fan of the New York Giants and Mets, and the New Jersey Devils. Steve was a world traveler, touring Pearl Harbor, the Normandy Beaches, South America, Europe, rounded Cape Horn and sailed above the Arctic Circle. He had a papal audience with Pope John Paul II in Rome and with Pope Benedict in New York City. One of his most endeared times spent with Cheryl was seeing the world famous Passion Play in 2022 in Germany.
Steve was predeceased by his parents John H. Schmid, Jr., Elizabeth Betteridge, and her husband Albert, his-in-laws Walter Ruszczyk, and his wife Doris Wilczek.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 35 years Cheryl Ann Ruszczyk, his brother Randall Schmid, and his wife Linda Meyer along with many cousins, friends and Brother Knights.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Kurzawa Funeral Home, 338 Main Street, South Amboy, NJ 08879. Funeral services will begin on Saturday, May 11, 2024 10 am from the funeral home followed by an 11 am funeral mass at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, South Amboy, NJ. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin, NJ.
