Stanley A. Cross, 102, of Sayreville, NJ, entered into Eternal Rest peacefully at
home on Sunday, July 9, 2023 with his family by his side.

Stanley was born in South Amboy on September 3, 1920, the son of George and
Caroline Cross (Krzyzkowski). Stanley is predeceased by his siblings Anthony,
Albert, Joan (Julia), and Cecilia (Jadczak).

Stanley is survived by his remaining sister Sally Bednarczyk, her children Caroline Bednarczyk and Carl Bednarczyk, and his niece Roseanne Savoy.

Stanley graduated from St. Mary’s High School in South Amboy and enlisted in
the U.S. Army in Nov. 1942. He achieved the rank of Private First Class and
served as an anti tank gun crewman with the 379th Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry
Division in the European Theatre of Operations till Nov. 1945. His World War II
military service took him through the countries of France, Belgium and finally into
Germany. During this time, he was awarded two field commendations. One was
from Gen. George S. Patton for the attack against the strongly fortified city of
Metz, Northern France, becoming part of the storied and honored group of combat
soldiers named ‘The Iron Men of Metz’, and the other was from Lt. General
William Hood Simpson for the successful battle of the famous ‘Ruhr Pocket’ in the
Ruhr region of Germany. For his valor, Stanley was awarded 3 Bronze Stars.
Stanley was inspired by his father and older brother Anthony when it came to
engineering and mechanical things.

When he returned from military service, he attended The University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, graduating in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. He went on to work at several engineering firms in New Jersey and Washington, DC. Stanley had a deep fascination and wonder of nature and ancient history, which he inspired his niece and nephew to follow. Stanley
appreciated the finer arts; music, sculpture, and figure drawing. He was a
meticulous planner and guide and was the unspoken compass in many matters.

He went on to share his many varied interests with his niece and nephew, which
included outdoor activities such as hiking, orienteering, kayaking, horseback
riding, biking, swimming, art and drawing. Stanley remained a lifelong member of
Sacred Heart R.C. Church in South Amboy.

A 10 am funeral mass was to be offered on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Sacred Heart
Church, South Amboy, but has now been rescheduled to Thursday, July 27, 2023 at the same time and location. Interment with Military Honors will be at Sacred Heart
Cemetery, Parlin, NJ immediately following. As per the family request, there will be no
viewing.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Stanley’s name may be made to Sacred
Heart Church which was an integral part of his long and happy life.
