It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria V. Hernandez, of Sayrevillea beloved mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at the age of 66 after surviving multiple strokes over the past 9 years.

Maria was born on October 2, 1958 in New York City to Vincent & Mary Mecca, and sister to Joseph Mecca. From an early age, she embodied a spirit of love, generosity and resilience, qualities that would define her life and inspire everyone who knew her.

Family was at the center of Maria’s life. Married to her loving husband, Wilfredo Sr., for 39 years years, their union was one of deep love and partnership, and shared. Together since elementary school, they created a home filled with laughter, warmth, and countless cherished memories. Sadly, Wilfredo Sr. passed away after a battle with cancer on December 19, 2019. It is beautifully symbolic of their lifelong bond that they share the same day of transitioning from this life five years apart from one another to the day. A devoted mother to her three sons—Wilfredo Jr., Brian and Daniel Hernandez — Maria poured her heart into her family. Her greatest joy was nurturing her boys, caring for her cousins, nieces, nephews and friends - guiding her family with wisdom and heart. In addition to her love and care of her brother, Joseph, Maria adored her sisters-in-law, Elsie Goldberg & Maddie Curatolo, and shared a special bond since childhood and a great many memories with them throughout their lives.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and a family forever grateful for the time they shared with her.

She is survived by her children Wilfredo Jr., Brian, and Daniel; her daughters-in-law Brittney and Saher; and her granddaughter, Meadow Hernandez. Maria was known for her many talents and for her service to her community.

Maria is predeceased her parents Vincent and Mary, her husband Wilfredo, Sr. and brother Joseph Mecca.

Family will gather to honor her in an intimate celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers and visitation, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the American Stroke Association.

Though her absence leaves an ache that words cannot describe, her light will continue to shine in the lives of her family and all who loved her. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the countless moments of love, laughter, and joy that she gifted us.

The family invites friends to attend a service on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at the Rosehill Crematory, Linden, NJ starting at 9am that will conclude at 10am.
