Julius "Joe" Ust Jr.
June 14, 1937 — March 17, 2024
Julius “Joe” Ust Jr., 86 of South Amboy, NJ passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 17, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
Julius was born in South Amboy and has been a lifelong resident. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country aboard the USS Forrestal CV-59. After his service he returned home, worked as a police officer for Sayreville for a brief time, then for National Lead and retired from IFF in Union Beach, after working for over 30 years. Among other things he was a volunteer firefighter for Independence Fire Company. Joe was truly one of a kind, always had a way to make light of a bad situation, he would give the shirt off his back. In his younger years he lived more on the wild side and loved riding his motorcycle. In his older years he enjoyed everyday walking the South Amboy waterfront, realizing how precious life is and would always enjoy spending as much time with his family as possible. His family and friends will miss him tremendously.
He was predeceased by his first wife Carol, his parents Julius, Sr and Wanda and his brothers John Ust and Thomas Ust.
Survived by his wife Dorothy “Bettie” Thomsen along with his two daughters Kathy Melchionna and her husband Joseph, Donna Baszak and her husband Raymond, Jr. He was the cherished grandfather to Jonathan Ostrander and his wife Lynette, Christopher Ostrander and his wife Nicole, Michael Ostrander, Amanda Mellos and her husband Peter and Brandon Baszak and his wife Julianna and his two adored great granddaughters Emilia Ostrander and Raela Mellos. He is also survived by his stepson Craig Thomsen and his husband Ray Jannsen and their son Liam. He is also survived by many granddogs.
Friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Kurzawa Funeral Home, 338 Main Street, South Amboy, NJ 08879 from 5pm to 8pm, and on the following morning from 8:30am to 9:30am. A 10am funeral mass will be offered on Friday, March 22, 2024 at Sacred Heart Church, South Amboy, NJ. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin, NJ.
