Helen Yablonicky Halmi, 87 of Sayreville and South Amboy died on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Roosevelt Care Center, Old Bridge, NJ
Born in South Amboy, Helen was a resident of South Amboy and later Sayreville before moving to Monroe Township in 2001. Soon after her husband died, Helen returned to Sayreville in 2012 to be closer to her family. Here she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as the ladies at Gillette Manor, doing word search puzzles, playing mahjong on the iPad and watching the Game Show Network.
Devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, Helen will be remembered for her love of family and her devotion to her daughter, Anne. One couldn’t help but notice the special bond between Helen and Anne as they spent many weekends in the Catskills, Wildwood or Pennsylvania clapping and dancing along to the Jester’s Polka Band or one of many polka festivals.
Helen was dedicated to seeing that Anne flourished and she fought to ensure Anne had equal opportunities (pity the priest that denied Anne the sacrament of Holy Communion). While Anne was the apple of her mother’s eye, Helen understood the importance of providing an example of patience, selflessness, empathy and most importantly unconditional love to Joey, Marty and Bob. She did this all while playing part-time referee to three growing boys, caregiver and sous chef for Joe at one of the many family holidays or birthday celebrations.
Her grandchildren will remember fondly sleepovers at mom-moms, the excitement of picking out the colors for the afghan blanket she would crochet for them, her baking their choice birthday cake and of course, her favorite birthday dinner – simply pizza and beer in a paper cup (not to be confused with the cup of water she kept outside when she’d sneak out to the back step for a quick cigarette)
Helen will be sadly missed, but her love of family now lives on with her boys and their families. There is no greater legacy than this.
Helen is survived by her sons Joseph (Mary Ann) Halmi of Sayreville; Marty (Peggy) Halmi of Monmouth Junction; her daughter-in-law Karen AnnHalmi of Freehold; hergrandchildren Susan (Erik) Reistrom; Cathy (Amy) Smith; Joseph (Rikki) Halmi; Ann Halmi; Martin (Jenn) Halmi; Robert Halmi, Andrew Halmi, Christopher (Mia) Halmi, Thomas Halmi; great-grandchildren Madelyn, Daniel, Levi, Riley, Miles as well asher nieces, nephews and in-laws.
