Angelina Alvarez
August 2, 1933 - January 5, 2021
Angelina Alvarez of Jacksonville, FL formerly of NY passed away peacefully on January 5, 2021. She was 87 years young. The baby of 14 children, Angie, as she was known to friends and family, was born to Severo Alvarez and Angela Cruz in NYC on the 5th day of a record breaking intense heat wave back in August of 1933. She overcame significant illness as a child and grew into a loving wife, caring mother and a strong Puerto Rican woman. In August 1963, in Santurce Puerto Rico, she married the love of her life, Herminio Alvarez Sr. whom she would spend 48 wonderful years with, before he passed away in July of 2011. Together, they settled with their family on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. For 20 years, she worked for the city in administration in various capacities with her last 5 years helping and supporting families with their Medicaid applications and guiding them with their benefits. She retired in 1998. Always one to give back, every month for over 15 years, she would sit down, open her mail and spend several hours writing over 25 checks to charities involving breast cancer research and survivors, hunger, childhood cancer research, senior citizens and her faith. She was a born again Christian who believed in the power of prayer and community. A lover of opera, she took great joy in listening to Andrea Bocelli. It always made her sway with happiness. She just smiled and sang along. The true blue matriarch of our family, and breast cancer survivor, Angelina joins her beloved Herman (as she called him) and her grandson Quinn in heaven and is survived and tremendously missed by her children, Linda Maldonado and Herminio Alvarez Jr. Her remaining grandchildren, Melly, DJ, Riah and Kalvin will miss her laugh and humor every day. She also cherished her great-grandchildren Jeremy, Jake, Jahrius, Leilani, Mateo, Jachin and Valdorian Jr. She took great pride in watching them grow into great young men and a special young lady. Never one to turn anyone away from her home and heart, she is also loved and greatly missed by her chosen and extended family. She was both Nana and Mom to many who will miss her always. Family and friends are invited to the Kurzawa Funeral Home, 338 Main Street, South Amboy, NJ 08879 on Saturday January 9th from 9am-11am. Burial at Rosehill Rosedale cemetery immediately follows. Due to current circumstances and guidelines relating to COVID-19, there will be limited occupancy during the viewing time, masks are required as well as social distancing practice while paying your respects.
